The Department of Mathematics & Statistics offers undergraduate majors and minors in both Mathematics and Statistics, while also offering master's programs in both Mathematics and Applied Statistics and Data Science.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is committed to exemplary teaching and learning, scholarship and service. Our courses are designed to provide every student with the technical background they will need, and to inculcate a love of logical thought and elegant reasoning. The aim of our undergraduate and graduate programs is that our mathematics students can formalize, define, analyze, prove, and communicate mathematical results. At the graduate level, we offer an MA in Mathematics and an MS in Applied Statistics and Data Science.

VILLANOVA ALUMNUS, MATH MAJOR ELECTED POPE
Born in Chicago, Ill., Pope Leo XIV, then Robert Prevost, joined the Order of St. Augustine in 1977. Following his undergraduate studies at ֱ, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1977, he earned a Master of Divinity from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago in 1982 and was ordained a priest the same year. ֱ Math Professor Wins Distinguished Teaching Award
The Mathematical Association of America honored Assistant Professor Alexander Diaz-Lopez, PhD, with one of its three Henry L. Alder Awards for Distinguished Teaching, which recognizes faculty whose teaching has been extraordinarily successful and whose effectiveness in teaching mathematics is shown to have influence beyond their own classrooms.
Applied Statistics and Data Science Master's Program Changes Meet Industry Demand
For many years, U.S. News has ranked “Statistician” as one of the best and fastest growing jobs in the country. More recently, “Data Scientist” has also appeared high in those rankings, a trend that mirrors changes in the industry. To better match industry demand and evolution of the program, ֱ has adjusted the curriculum and changed the name of its master’s program in applied statistics to “Applied Statistics and Data Science.” MORE...
